Igama LeNkosi (Malibongwe) is performed by Spirit Of Praise 11 featuring Tshepo Nyawuza. In my piano cover, you can see my hands, highlighted keys and the chord names as I play. Use the video to follow the voicings, then practise the short sections you need for your church set.

The cover is embedded above. Follow the overhead keyboard and the on-screen chord display, or open the video on YouTube for its playback controls.

Set up in F♯ / G♭

This cover is in F♯ major, the same piano keys as G♭ major. The thumbnail uses F♯; our song listing uses G♭. If your music director calls either name, you can use the same keys. Find F♯ with your left hand and play the tonic F♯–A♯–C♯ slowly with your right before starting the video.

These are the main key-family practice shapes, not a claim that every one appears in this recording:

  • 1 — F♯ major: F♯–A♯–C♯
  • 2m — G♯ minor: G♯–B–D♯
  • 4 — B major: B–D♯–F♯
  • 5 — C♯ major: C♯–E♯–G♯ (E♯ is the white F key)
  • 6m — D♯ minor: D♯–F♯–A♯

The on-screen chord labels are your source for the actual cover. Write them down as you watch, including any colour tones or passing chords; don’t force the song into a generic four-chord loop.

A practical way to learn this cover

  1. Watch once without playing. Notice where the musical phrases breathe and when the keyboard becomes busier. Listen for the singer’s space.
  2. Take one short phrase. Pause after a chord change, copy the highlighted notes, and say the displayed chord name aloud. Start with two chords rather than the whole song.
  3. Separate your hands. Play the right-hand shape first. Add a simple left-hand root or root-and-fifth only when the change is comfortable. A steady bass helps more than a run that arrives late.
  4. Connect the shapes. Keep shared notes under the same fingers where possible. Practise the change slowly, then loop the phrase with the video at a reduced playback speed.
  5. Return to the full performance. Play along and leave room for the lead vocal. If your team takes the song into another key, remember the chord numbers you wrote down and transpose from them.

What this page gives you

This is a visual play-along and practice guide for my cover, not a verified, bar-by-bar transcription of the original Spirit Of Praise arrangement. The chord names and highlighted notes in the video show what I play. For help building the major-key chord family and moving between shapes, start the free Diatonic Chords and Inversions course. You can also check the F♯ major chord before practising the song.
