If you’re after the Yeshua piano chords, start here: Jesus Image’s “Yeshua” is a slow, open worship song at 64 BPM, and it sits in G♭ major. Yeshua is the Hebrew name of Jesus, so the whole song is one long act of calling on His name. On keys, your job is to make room for that, not to fill it.

A song that wants space around it

This isn’t an opener. “Yeshua” belongs in the deep end of the set, after the fast songs have settled and the leader wants the room to slow right down. At 64 BPM there’s a lot of air between beats, and the temptation is to fill it. Don’t. Let chords ring, let the pad carry the gaps, and let the singers decide when the next phrase starts.

Think of yourself as the floor the song stands on. If someone in the congregation can hear your hands moving, you’re probably doing too much.

Getting comfortable in G♭ major

G♭ has six flats, which scares people off. Here’s the thing: on a piano it’s one of the kindest keys there is. Your fingers sit on the black notes, and the shapes fall under the hand naturally. The chords you’ll lean on:

  • 1: G♭ (G♭, B♭, D♭)
  • 4: C♭ (C♭, E♭, G♭). Yes, C♭. It’s the white note you’d call B, but in this key it’s spelled C♭.
  • 5: D♭ (D♭, F, A♭)
  • 6m: E♭m (E♭, G♭, B♭)
  • 2m: A♭m (A♭, C♭, E♭)

For the sound, layer a warm grand with a soft pad underneath, pad volume low enough that you only notice it when you lift your hands. A touch of reverb helps. Avoid bright stage-piano patches here; they cut through where you want to blend.

How the Yeshua piano chords move

We don’t have a full chord chart for this song yet, so I won’t hand you a progression and pretend it’s gospel truth. What I can tell you is the family it lives in: a slow major-key worship song that spends most of its time around the 1, the 4 and the 6m, with the 5 used to lean back home. Use your ears with the video above, and check each change against the chords listed earlier. If a chord sounds sad and warm, try the 6m. If it sounds like it’s opening a door, it’s probably the 4.

If you’re still learning to hear those moves, ten minutes on the Ear Trainer will pay off quickly.

Voicings that keep it soft

  • Right hand: keep voicings high and close. Try G♭ with an added 9th (G♭, A♭, B♭, D♭). The 9th makes it float.
  • Left hand: whole notes, low and simple. Root only, or root and fifth. Hold them for the full bar.
  • On the 6m: E♭m9 (E♭, G♭, B♭, D♭, F) is gorgeous here. That extra 9th on top is where the atmosphere comes from.
  • The lift: before you go home to the 1, hold a D♭sus4 (D♭, G♭, A♭) for a beat or two, then let it fall to D♭. The suspension is a little held breath before resolution.

The Chord Voicing Lab lets you try these shapes and hear them before Sunday.

If the leader moves it out of G♭

Plenty of worship leaders will drop this to F or lift it to G for their range. That’s where numbers save you. If you’ve learned the song as 1, 4, 5 and 6m rather than letter names, a new key is just a new set of letters. In F, the 1 is F, the 4 is B♭, the 5 is C and the 6m is Dm. In G, it’s G, C, D and Em.

If the Nashville Number System is new to you, that page is a decent primer. Then load the song into Gig Mode so the letters are on screen in whatever key gets called.

Fifteen minutes to Sunday-ready

  1. Five minutes: play the 1, 4, 5 and 6m in G♭ as plain triads, then as add9 voicings. Get used to C♭ as a name.
  2. Five minutes: play along with the video above, left hand only, whole notes. Find where each chord change lands.
  3. Three minutes: add the right hand and practise the D♭sus4 to D♭ move before each return home.
  4. Two minutes: play the whole thing quieter than feels natural. That’s usually the right volume.

Quick answers

What key is Yeshua in?

The version in our video is in G♭ major, at 64 BPM.

Is Yeshua hard to play on piano?

Not technically. The challenge is restraint: holding chords long and leaving space. The flats look worse than they feel.

What does Yeshua mean?

It’s the Hebrew name for Jesus.
