Here’s how I play the Ndenzel’ Uncedo piano chords from the Joyous Celebration recording, in A♭ major at around 110 BPM. The title is a plea for help, and the song sits right in that space: a steady, heartfelt cry that a whole congregation can carry. There’s one borrowed chord in the chorus that makes the song, and once you’ve got it, you’ll want to use it everywhere.
At 110 BPM it’s not a slow ballad and it’s not a jump-around praise song either. It sits in the middle, which makes it a great bridge in a set: after the high-energy opening and before the leader slows things right down. The groove is steady and congregational. Everyone knows where the next chord is going, and that’s exactly why people sing it so loudly.
For you, that means keeping time is the whole job. Don’t rush the chorus when the room gets loud.
A♭ major has four flats: A♭, B♭, C, D♭, E♭, F and G. It’s a lovely key for choirs and sits comfortably for most leaders. In numbers:
Go for a full grand piano sound. This song likes weight, so don’t thin it out with a bright patch.
These come straight from our full chord chart for Ndenzel’ Uncedo.
1, 3m, 4, 5, 1, 3m, 4, 5, 1, which in A♭ is A♭, Cm, D♭, E♭, A♭, Cm, D♭, E♭, A♭.
It’s a climb. The bass walks up A♭, C, D♭, E♭ and then comes home. Twice. Let your left hand feel that upward pull, because the choir is riding it.
4, 5, 1, ♭7m, 4, 5, 1, which is D♭, E♭, A♭, G♭m, D♭, E♭, A♭.
Now, that ♭7m. Our chart writes it as F♯m, and on the keyboard it’s the same three keys: F♯, A and C♯. Theoretically, in A♭ it’s spelled G♭m, the minor chord built on the flat 7. Either way, here’s why it works: G♭m is the minor version of the 4’s own 4. When you play G♭m and then D♭, you hear that soft, aching “amen” sound that gospel players love. It’s the moment in the song where everyone leans in.
This is a song people sing in all sorts of keys, depending on who’s leading. Keep the numbers in your head: verse is 1, 3m, 4, 5; chorus is 4, 5, 1, ♭7m, 4, 5, 1. The ♭7m is always a whole step below the 1, as a minor chord. Check the every-key table on our chart page before the service, and keep Gig Mode handy for the letters on the night.
Our version and chart are in A♭ major at 110 BPM.
It’s a ♭7m: G♭m in A♭ (written F♯m on our chart). It leads softly into the 4.
